In August 2026, “ZKsync” no longer points as neatly to one place as it once did. ZKsync Era is still running, while newer ZKsync chains use ZKsync OS. That change matters the first time you try to trade: a token, wallet balance, or swap screen can look familiar while sitting on the wrong network.
A ZKsync swap is simply exchanging one token for another on a ZKsync network through a decentralised exchange, or DEX. A DEX is an application that lets your wallet trade against liquidity pools rather than matching you with one named buyer. The phrase is broad, though. Before touching the swap button, decide which chain holds your funds. For a first attempt, ZKsync Era is the network most people mean when they say they want to swap on ZKsync.
The practical route is to open a DEX that supports that network, connect your wallet, and choose the correct chain in both places. The actual transaction described here was completed through a zksync swap.
The five checks that prevent an expensive first mistake
- Put the wallet on the right network. A wallet is the application that controls your blockchain account. Select ZKsync Era, not Ethereum Mainnet and not another ZKsync chain. If your tokens are elsewhere, they must be bridged or transferred first; they will not appear merely because the wallet is connected.
- Keep a little ETH on Era. ETH is the native asset used to pay gas, meaning the network fee for processing a transaction. You can be holding plenty of the token you want to sell and still be unable to swap if the wallet has no Era ETH for gas.
- Choose the token carefully. Search by its symbol, then compare the displayed contract address with a trusted source. A token contract is the blockchain address that defines a token. Two assets can share nearly identical names, and the wrong one may have no useful market or may be designed to trap sellers.
- Read the quote before approving. The quote tells you how much of the second token you should receive. Check the minimum received amount, the price impact, and the fee. Price impact is the change caused by your own trade drawing from the pool. If swapping $20 would noticeably move the price, the pool is thin or the trade is too large for it.
- Approve, then swap. For many tokens, the first transaction is an approval: permission for the DEX’s smart contract to use a specified amount of that token. The second transaction performs the exchange. Confirm each transaction in the wallet and wait for the first one to finish before submitting the next.
Slippage is the difference between the price you expect and the price you finally receive. A small setting can make a trade fail during a fast market; a large setting can let the trade complete at a poor price. For a modest, liquid trade, leave the default unless you understand why it needs changing.
Afterward, check the new balance on ZKsync Era and keep the transaction record. If the balance seems missing, the wallet may simply be viewing another network or may not yet display that token. The useful meaning of “zksync swap” is therefore not just “exchange two coins.” It is: exchange them on the chain where the funds actually are, with enough ETH to finish the transaction, after checking exactly which asset the wallet is using.
